The cottage is ideal if you are looking for a quiet retreat or just want to explore the veld, but it is also a great base from which to explore the surrounding area.
Cape Nature’s De Mond Nature Reserve is a small but ecologically important reserve with the Heuningnes River estuary as its focal point and has been a Ramsar wetland site since 1986. The reserve is a must-visit for bird watching, hiking amidst coastal fynbos, and fishing.
The veld area where the De Mond Veld Cottage is situated borders the reserve and it is just a 600m walk to the entrance gate, where the normal entrance fee applies.
Bredasdorp is the nearest major town to the cottage and is the best destination if you need to pop to the shops. Other attractions include:

Arniston/Waenhuiskrans is renowned for its huge waterside cave (well worth a visit at low tide), quaint fisherman's cottages (an artist's delight) and azure blue seas in which to fish and swim.
The Agulhas Wine Triangle is a cool climate region with a number of vineyards near Elim within an hour’s drive of the cottage that offer tastings, including Strandveld Vineyards, Lomond, Black Oystercatcher, and The Giant Periwinkle (by appointment).
